How can I test my internet speed?

If you want to take advantage of all the offers on the Internet these days, you need not only a good PC but also a good bandwidth in your own line.

Many games, videos and other applications can only be enjoyed if the speed is right. However, when a connection is advertised as having 50 Mbit/s, some people are surprised at the actual data throughput. How can you test the real speed of your own Internet connection?

Surf stick or fiber optic cable?

A fundamental question when it comes to your own internet speed is of course the type of reception. A surf stick can process far less data than a comparable connection with a fiber optic cable. Nevertheless, the providers must of course provide information about the speed and adhere to it.

If you suddenly notice during the program download that the connection has far less throughput than the user would expect, you should carry out a speed test. With a surf stick, the speed is influenced by external circumstances, but with a classic cable connection it should be largely stable.

In order to check whether the DSL really corresponds to the services specified in the contract, a speed test should always be carried out.

Ping – the right test for your connection

The test run of the internet speed is the basis for a possible complaint to the provider. If the agreed service is not found, termination is legal and new providers can be found at TOP DSL.

But what is the best way to test speed? The ping test has proven to be particularly effective. A small message is sent to a reference website and the response time is equivalent to the speed.

In order to take into account the variances during testing, tests should be carried out at different times but always using the same website.

  • In the evening the speed is always worse than in the afternoon
  • Your own connection may be affected by problems with the computer
  • The same side must always be taken

By checking your internet speed, you can quickly determine whether the desired and paid-for performance is actually achieved.
