Data loss: The most common causes

Data loss has long been a serious problem; more and more data is being stored electronically and is therefore at risk of being lost. There are many reasons for data loss, and the effects can be far worse than just annoying. For many companies, a large amount of data loss would be the end. But how does data loss happen? Statistics show that most cases of data loss are due to hardware errors. In order to prevent data loss, it is helpful to know the possible causes of data loss.

Hardware error

The most common cause of data loss is hardware errors. This includes all kinds of defects, as well as the usual wear and tear of hard drives. Although these errors can hardly be avoided, the risk can be minimized by handling the hardware carefully. Shocks should be avoided, especially with hard drives, as these can lead to a so-called head crash.

External influences

External influences are a particular threat to data in notebooks. It is important to pay attention to the external conditions. This will prevent water damage and dust from entering the devices. Extreme temperatures should be avoided, both hot and cold, as these will bring the electronics to their knees. Strong magnetic fields in the immediate vicinity of the electronics can also lead to data loss.

Operating error

Operating errors are also a common cause of data loss. What should now be taken for granted is the frequent saving of files. If the computer crashes unexpectedly or the battery on the notebook changes its mind, the data is quickly lost. Unintentional and deliberate deletion of files are also possible causes of data loss.

Software

The effects of software errors can range from program crashes to computer crashes, which in turn can lead to data loss. Then there are the feared viruses, which repeatedly cause the loss of important data. Here, too, frequent saving is recommended. The PC can also be protected with a firewall and virus protection, but above all by being careful when surfing the Internet.
