Music, films, audio books and photos are dear to us, and extensive project files and important text documents are hard to replace. However, if customer data and stored projects can no longer be found, the damage is hard to quantify! Backups are therefore very important!
The different options for data storage
Students know the problem: you’ve spent hours poring over a term paper and suddenly the word processing program or the entire computer crashes. Often the application itself offers a backup option in such a case, but every now and then the worst-case scenario does occur. Without a traceable storage system and/or appropriate backups, the poor student has no choice but to rewrite the entire text.
And that’s a fairly harmless example! In the design field, countless hours of work can be wasted by accidentally deleting files. The damage is often immense. There are many ways to create backups: USB sticks on www.vim-flash.com, storage options in the cloud or a second computer with a folder system – backup copies can be stored in a variety of places. It also depends on the type of file!
File sizes and optimal storage media
Text files are comparatively small, even if they have a large number of pages and an illustrated layout. There are countless backup methods available here. If you store your thesis in a special folder according to the so-called “generation principle”, you are taking a lower risk. Of course, something can happen to the notebook or workstation in question. External storage on a stick or, if necessary, in your own email inbox is therefore extremely practical. Larger amounts of data can also be stored on separate servers or in the cloud with online providers. Professional companies that work with large files and work for many different customers often store hard drives like file folders in lockable cabinets. Since the storage capacity of hard drives has increased significantly in recent years, fewer and fewer hard drives are needed.
